November Newsletter

JROTC November Newsletter

School is in full swing as is the burgeoning JROTC program. Our ranks have swelled to a small population of 192 cadets in SY 2008/2009!!
I would not be surprised to see those numbers increase even more in the coming years. Thus far we competed in North Georgia with two female and one male raider team (fitness). With the economy the way it is we had to downsize and drive vans, but we “Got Err Done”. All had a great time and a big thank you to our chaperones, Ms. Davis and Ms. Lasher!!
Completed our first fundraiser with the selling of cheesecakes. Your sons, daughters, and of course, yourselves sold over $17,000 worth of cheesecakes making our profits of a $7000 check. Seems like a small fortune but when you add up our transportation and logistical support to the program at the end of the school year our profits turn into zero balance, which is the price of having an awesome program!
In early October we took our seniors who wanted to attend to the local St. Petersburg USF campus for an orientation and remarks concerning ROTC scholarships. Hopefully, some our seniors who will be attending college next fall will take their scheduled SAT’s/Act’s, and apply for an ROTC scholarship online. Speaking of scholarships. Congratulations are in order to Mr. Courtney Goner, a recent 2008 graduate. He is now attending FAMU on a full ROTC scholarship. Remember, National ROTC scholarship deadline application is December 15, 2008!
At the local Dixie Hollins drill meet on October 18, 2008 we competed against Gibbs and Dixie Hollins. Our opponents were merciless and we came in overall second.
This meet is like a sandlot drill meet, where teams work out their “kinks” Our next meet when we apply these learned lessons will be at the University of Tampa against approximately 50 other JROTC programs from as far away as Tallahassee to Miami. Hope to see many of our moms and dads there!! It will hosted at the University of Tampa on November 15, 2008 from 8:00AM until about 4:00PM.
This first semester will be ending before we know it and there is much to do, as listed below:
a. Orienteering at Wekiva November 1
b. Parent Meeting Nov 6 JROTC classroom 15-42
c. National Raider Meet in Molena, GA 8 November
d. Veteran’s Day November 11 on campus
e. University of Tampa Drill Meet 15 November
f. Stuart Florida Raider Meet & Kelly Park Orienteering on 13 December
g. Toy’s for Tots on 20 December

                            Wayne A. McGlamry
                            Senior Army Instructor
                            “Students First Education Always”

The US Army JROTC Pirate Battalion marches along!

In the past few months the JROTC program here at Boca Ciega High School has been very busy. We’ve entered many events that you may not be aware of so let’s get you up to speed.

In November the raider team (fitness team) had a triumphant win at Alonso High School in Tampa. Three BCHS teams entered and all three proudly walked away with a guaranteed spot at the state raider competition in February 2008 which will be held in Jupiter, Fl.

The BCHS JROTC pride doesn’t end there; yet again we conquered another meet. South Fork raider challenge wasn’t challenging enough for our two competing teams, as both teams effortlessly placed. The male team took first and the mixed team took second.

In December the JROTC started the holiday season with great admiration and took part in the annual Toys for Tots event. It was very successful and many other JROTC programs attended from the Pinellas county area.

Most recently BCHS competed in the all Pinellas County Drill Meet. Naturally both the female and the male fitness teams ranked superior above all and took first place. The male color guard marched themselves into third place. Our knowledge and tidiness ranked a third place for the inspection. The tug of war team yanked the competition to the dirt, taking first place in the event.

All JROTC cadets are writing an annual essay this year’s topic is how JROTC helps the cadet’s deal with peer pressure. The winner from our program will receive a $100 bond and their essay will be submitted to Eastern Region for further competition.

To conclude this letter let us leave you with some upcoming events and helpful reminders. The state raider meet, district drill meet, and our informal inspection are coming up. Also don’t forget about FCAT. Testing will be held in late February early March, be prepared! And parents remember you can get involved with JROTC by attending our monthly parent booster club meetings. The next two meetings will be held on February the 7th and March the 6th. This next parents meeting will be very special. All LET levels that have earned ribbons and other miscellaneous items to be worn on their uniform will receive them at the parents meeting. Be sure to attend so you and your cadet can share the honor!

Sincerely,

BN S5

Felicity Schweitzer
